GENDER EQUALITY MISCONCEPTIONS

You will hear or you have ever heard many people especially, men saying that" This gender equality principle has caused my wife to disrespect me" that she wants me to help her with cooking, she wants me to take care of children and other household chores. The inability to agree on that, results into domestic violence. Is there anything gender equality has to do with household chores? Does gender equality change the natural responsibility of a girl and a boy or a women and a man in family or society?

On the other hand, many people think that gender equality requires girls and boys or men and women to be the same or, that they be treated exactly alike. And due to this belief it has caused conflicts in families and community as a whole. Therefore, H2H COMMUNITY SHAPING has managed to gather information from different people in different places, on how they understand gender equality and possible solutions to overcome these challenges that families are facing due to gender equality misconceptions.

However, Where gender equality has been taken as it is, where it has been understood as it is families are enjoying, families are achieving economic development and both men and women are enjoying equal opportunities. Therefore, lets have a look at what gender equality is and should be, what is its importance in the society , purposely to eliminate those misconceptions on gender equality.

WHAT IS GENDER EQUALITY

Gender equality does not imply that women and men are the same, but they have equal values and should have equal access to opportunities, to resources regardless of gender. it also means both men and women participating in decision making and also participating in economic development.

WHO IS AFFECTED BY GENDER INEQUALITY

Gender inequality affects not only women but also men, children and the community as  a whole. Traditional stereotypes affects men. Men feel pressure from  the society to feel like real men, be emotionally strong and be the main income earners. Yes let it be like that. But, what if men work together with women and they take a part in decision making? they work to earn money how would it be?
Men are more likely to do suicide, others leave their homes, others subject themselves into  unhealthy risks by drinking too much due to family problems but, what if they involve their women in overcoming those challenges, how would it be?
Not only, men get affected by gender inequality but also children. Some children fail to meet their daily needs because their men are facing gender based violence from their fathers. Young ladies also meet gender inequality by not having equal opportunities.

BENEFITS OF GENDER EQUALITY

Gender equality benefits in terms of well being of the family, it also benefits the economy. In family or a society where gender equality principle is applied effectively, members are better off. There are no conflicts because, resources are effectively shared. Furthermore, everyone is productive in terms of economy which promotes well being of the entire family.
